IRC stands for 'Inter(net) Relay Chat'. Like it says, it's an chat protocol used by millions of people.
Even when you chat at an web site (web chat), you are probably chatting on IRC. There are many different irc-networks,
all of them has it's own rules and purpose. When you go to IRC, you have to join a channel (also room)
before you can chat. It's also possible to chat in private with only one person, this is called a query.
Most channels has it's own rules, always make sure you get to know them, otherwise you got a chance to get
kicked or even banned. When you join a channel, the best thing to do is to wait for a while and read what
others are talking about. Every channel has a topic -most clients shows it at the top of your screen-, look
what it says.

My IRC life began, because some friend at ICQ told me to come and chat with her and her friends. The first channel I ever joined
was #3FM at IRCnet, a dutch channel about some national radio station. It's dead at the moment, but I'm planning to get it back alive.
From that moment on, I joined every time when I dialed in.
When I moved and got my 10Mbit (</showoff>), I became more involved with IRC, starting my first channel and playing with eggdrop's.
My first own channel was #selwerd at IRCnet, named after the neighborhood I live in. But some dodo's TO'ed it and when I got it back, it was
dead for life. I believe it still exists there, but there's no real action. Now I have it up and running again at DrLnet, with an average of 45 daily visitors
