Next to IRC, there are (ro)bots, called Eggdrop. There are more kinds of bots, but the most popular is this one. It's still supported and developed. When you are thinking of getting an eggdrop, you have to be sure you are up to it. Eggdrop's are easy when you have some experience in Linux and IRC, but a pain when you only work in Windoze and just started with IRC'ing.
You can use scripts -written in TCL- to protect your channel(s), store information, make stats and much more. They are able of using your IPv6 connection (if you have one), but then they have to be patched first.
